Tips on Resetting Your Clock

Battery (quartz) clocks: Always use the hand set knob on the back of the clock to reset the time. The hands may be set clockwise or counter clockwise. If the hand set knob is not accessible, you may have to carefully move the minute hand one complete revolution counterclockwise to set the clock back one hour.

Keywind Clocks (spring or weight driven): Most modern clocks (less than 25 years old) may be set by turning the minute hand (long hand) backwards (counterclockwise) one hour. If your clock chimes the quarter hours and/or strikes on the hour, the chimes may go out of sequence but should self correct after 1 to 2 hours. If you encounter resistance while turning the minute hand backwards - STOP. Move the minute hand clockwise 5 minutes at which time the clock may chime. After the chimes stop, move the minute hand counter clockwise again. This should eliminate any resistance. If resistance continues, call us for direction.

Antique Clocks: If your older clock chimes the quarter hours or strikes the hour, do not turn the minute hand backwards. This could damage the chiming or striking assembly. If the clock has a swinging pendulum, it is recommended that you stop the pendulum for one hour and then restart it. If your antique clock does not have a chime or strike component, it is generally safe to turn the minute hand backwards to set the time. If you have any questions regarding the proper and safe way to set your clock, call Hands of Time at 301-206-3281.
