The Story of Barking Rocks
"Along with the ever changing seas surging through the rocks combined with the gusting winds “Barking Rocks lighthouse” got its name by the strange noises it could sometimes emit, the haunting sounds of dogs sometimes whimpering, occasionally howling but often barking!
Unfortunately like so many perils of the sea The Barking rocks took their fair share of sailors and their ships to the bottom of the sea, splintering and dashing them onto the unyielding rocks.
There were survivors though, not least Mr. and Mrs. Barking the first survivors to be wrecked here and who felt that they were therefore entitled to take the names of the infamous rocks.
They along with other survivors from other storms set about building a community on the rocks. They built houses from the remains of the wood they could salvage from the wrecked ships but most importantly of all they built the Lighthouse. It became their mission to try and prevent any more casualties of the sea. (Except when they turned it off because they wanted some new company)
Over the years the village on the rocks grew, more houses were built as more children were born. The residents even took to mining and tunneling into the rocks themselves to make extra rooms.
They lived off the sea, and its abundant larder, they made small boats and weaved nets. They ate well and celebrated their lives and their survival and would spend days at a time sleeping out in the warm sunshine.
Then there were the nights, the special nights when the sea was right and the wind was right and the rocks would “bark.” They would party long into the early hours celebrating its mysterious sounds but as this happened most nights and the “barking” was so loud there probably wasn't’t really any point in trying to sleep anyway. They could save that for the sunny days ahead."
